Coast Renewable Energy
Toronto, ON
Coast is a personal hydro-kinetic generator, providing user with the opportunity to harness, store, and utilize their own renewable energy when off the grid. Coast began as my industrial design thesis project, where I developed it from initial value proposition, through research and development,CAD and prototyping, and eventually to fabrication. Coast went on to be accepted into the business incubator program 'The Imagination Catalyst" at OCADU, and won the UMBRA Industrial Design Thesis Award.
As a renewable energy source, Coast clips onto a canoe, kayak or paddle board, and passively converts its rotation through the water into usable energy which is stored in an internal lithium ion battery. Once out of the water, any device which charges via USB can plug in and charge up. There are an increasing number of enabled products, and technological innovations within the outdoor adventure industry. These products and services provide various forms of information, memorialize events, and have created new expectations regarding ones experiences within this domain. These products however are intended to be used in environments where energy is often unattainable, and carrying around additional battery packs adds a lot of weight, and can be quite expensive.
